Soothing & Repair
Madecassoside
Centella asiatica extract that soothes, strengthens skin barrier, and reduces redness.
Also known as: Asiaticoside, Centella asiatica extract, INCI: Centella Asiatica Extract
- What it is
- Madecassoside is a triterpene glycoside compound isolated from Centella asiatica (also called gotu kola), a traditional Asian medicinal plant. It's one of the primary active constituents responsible for the plant's skin-healing properties.
- What it does
- Madecassoside strengthens the skin barrier by promoting collagen and ceramide synthesis, reduces inflammation and redness, and accelerates wound healing and tissue repair. It works by stimulating fibroblast activity and increasing dermal collagen production while calming inflammatory pathways, making it particularly effective post-procedure or for compromised skin.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports its use for barrier repair, post-procedure healing, and reducing erythema; multiple peer-reviewed studies demonstrate efficacy at 0.1–1% concentrations for sensitive and irritated skin. Evidence is particularly robust for post-laser and post-microneedling recovery.
- Best for
- Sensitive, reactive, compromised, or post-procedure skin; rosacea, eczema, and conditions with barrier dysfunction or chronic inflammation.
- Pairs well with
- Ceramides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and other barrier-supporting ingredients; also synergizes with gentle hydrating actives.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts; generally well-tolerated alongside most actives, though avoid combining with strong oxidizing agents in the same formulation.
- Cautions
- Very well-tolerated; rare allergic contact dermatitis reported in sensitive individuals. Pregnancy use is considered safe based on traditional use, but patch-test if concerned. Not sun-sensitizing.
