Soothing & Repair
Bisabolol
Natural sesquiterpene alcohol that calms inflammation and redness.
Also known as: α-Bisabolol, Bisabolol, Levomenol, German chamomile extract component; INCI: Bisabolol
- What it is
- Bisabolol is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol found primarily in German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and other plants. It's a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a mild, warm scent.
- What it does
- Bisabolol reduces inflammation and soothes irritated skin by modulating inflammatory pathways and calming reactive skin. It also promotes wound healing, reduces redness, and has mild antimicrobial properties. Its soothing action makes it particularly effective for sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure skin.
- The evidence
- Moderate clinical evidence supports its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing effects; multiple studies confirm efficacy in reducing irritation and supporting barrier recovery. Evidence is strongest for post-procedure use and sensitive-skin applications.
- Best for
- Sensitive, reactive, inflamed, or compromised skin; ideal post-procedure (laser, microneedling, chemical peels) and for rosacea or eczema-prone skin.
- Pairs well with
- Centella asiatica, allantoin, panthenol, niacinamide, and other soothing agents; works well in barrier-repair formulations.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts; generally compatible with most actives. Use cautiously with high concentrations of exfoliating acids on already-sensitized skin.
- Cautions
- Rare allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals; patch test recommended for chamomile-sensitive patients. Generally safe in pregnancy and non-photosensitizing.
