Soothing & Repair
Aloe Vera
Gel-rich succulent leaf extract that soothes and hydrates skin.
Also known as: Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, aloe vera gel, aloe extract
- What it is
- Aloe vera is a succulent plant whose inner leaf gel contains water, polysaccharides, amino acids, and compounds like acemannan. The gel is extracted and used in skincare as a hydrating and soothing agent.
- What it does
- Aloe vera hydrates the skin, reduces inflammation, and promotes a cooling sensation on irritated or sun-exposed skin. Its polysaccharides form a moisture-binding film, while its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds help calm redness and support the skin barrier. It may also support wound healing and collagen remodeling.
- The evidence
- Moderate evidence supports its anti-inflammatory and hydrating effects; strong evidence for soothing sunburned or irritated skin. Clinical studies confirm benefit for minor burns and post-procedure redness, though evidence for deep collagen stimulation is emerging and limited.
- Best for
- Sensitive, irritated, sunburned, or post-procedure skin; all skin types benefit from its hydrating and calming properties.
- Pairs well with
- Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, centella asiatica, chamomile, niacinamide, and other soothing or hydrating actives.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts; however, avoid combining with strong acids or retinoids in the same step on very sensitive skin to prevent over-irritation.
- Cautions
- Rare contact allergy or irritation in sensitive individuals; latex (from the leaf latex, not the gel) can cause GI upset if ingested but is not a topical concern. Generally safe during pregnancy when used topically.
