Peptides & Growth Factors

Growth Factors

Signaling proteins that stimulate cell repair, collagen, and skin renewal.

Also known as: EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor), VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), NGF (Nerve Growth Factor), TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor-beta), IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1)

What it is
Growth factors are naturally occurring signaling proteins that bind to cell receptors and trigger biological responses. In skincare, they're typically derived from plant cells, yeast fermentation, or recombinant technology to stimulate fibroblasts and keratinocytes.
What it does
Growth factors activate cellular communication pathways that boost collagen and elastin synthesis, accelerate wound healing, reduce inflammation, and promote skin cell turnover. They essentially tell skin cells to repair and regenerate themselves more efficiently, improving texture, firmness, and barrier function.
The evidence
Moderate to strong evidence for EGF and FGF in clinical settings (wound healing, post-procedure recovery); emerging evidence for topical efficacy in cosmetic formulations, as stability and penetration remain challenges. Most robust data comes from professional-grade serums and post-procedure protocols rather than over-the-counter products.
Best for
Aging, compromised barrier, post-procedure recovery, and dull or textured skin; especially valuable after microneedling, laser, or chemical peels.
Pairs well with
Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and antioxidants (vitamin C, ferulic acid); excellent in post-procedure protocols with gentle cleansers and SPF.
Use cautiously with
Avoid combining with high-strength retinoids or acids immediately post-application; may over-stimulate sensitive or reactive skin. Use cautiously with active acne (risk of increased inflammation).
Cautions
Generally well-tolerated, but can trigger mild irritation or flushing in sensitive skin; avoid during active inflammation or open wounds unless under professional guidance. Stability is critical—store in cool, dark conditions and use within recommended timeframe.
