Copper Peptides (GHK-Cu)
Copper-binding peptide that stimulates collagen and elastin production.
Also known as: GHK-Cu, Copper tripeptide, Glycine-Histidine-Lysine copper complex, Cupreine.
- What it is
- Copper peptides are short chains of amino acids (specifically glycine, histidine, and lysine) bound to copper ions. Copper is a natural cofactor for enzymes involved in collagen cross-linking and skin repair; the peptide carrier enhances its bioavailability and stability in skincare formulations.
- What it does
- Copper peptides stimulate fibroblasts to increase collagen I and III synthesis and enhance elastin production, improving skin firmness and elasticity. They also promote wound healing, reduce inflammation, and have antioxidant properties. The copper component activates lysyl oxidase and other enzymes critical for extracellular matrix remodeling.
- The evidence
- Moderate clinical evidence supports collagen-stimulating and wound-healing benefits; multiple peer-reviewed studies show improved skin firmness and elasticity over 8–12 weeks. Evidence for anti-aging efficacy is solid but not as extensive as retinoids or vitamin C.
- Best for
- Mature, thin, or sun-damaged skin; those seeking collagen support and improved elasticity without irritation; post-procedure healing.
- Pairs well with
- Retinoids, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptide blends; works synergistically with other collagen-boosting actives.
- Use cautiously with
- High-dose vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) in the same formula may reduce copper peptide stability; avoid mixing with strong chelating agents or alkaline pH formulations that destabilize the copper complex.
- Cautions
- Generally well-tolerated; rare contact sensitization reported. Avoid in pregnancy unless cleared by physician. Not suitable for those with copper sensitivity or Wilson's disease. Formulation pH and stability are critical—poorly formulated products may lose efficacy.
