Sun Protection
Zinc Oxide
Broad-spectrum mineral UV blocker; physical sunscreen workhorse.
Also known as: Zinc oxide, ZnO, calamine (when mixed with iron oxides); same name in INCI.
- What it is
- Zinc oxide is an inorganic mineral powder that sits on the skin surface and reflects and scatters both UVA and UVB rays. It is non-nano or nano-sized depending on formulation, with nano particles offering better cosmetic elegance but raising some safety questions.
- What it does
- Zinc oxide provides immediate, broad-spectrum UV protection (UVA and UVB) without requiring absorption into the skin. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, making it calming for sensitive or compromised skin. Unlike chemical sunscreens, it does not degrade in sunlight and remains effective throughout the day.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports zinc oxide as an effective broad-spectrum UV blocker; it is FDA-approved as a Category I sunscreen active. Multiple studies confirm its stability and non-irritating profile, though nano-particle safety data remains moderate and ongoing.
- Best for
- Sensitive, reactive, rosacea-prone, and post-procedure skin; ideal for those with chemical sunscreen sensitivities or allergies.
- Pairs well with
- Titanium dioxide (complementary mineral blocker), silicones (improve spreadability), iron oxides (add tint and reduce white cast), hydrating humectants like glycerin.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts; generally compatible with most skincare actives. Avoid layering excessively thick formulations that may feel occlusive on very oily skin.
- Cautions
- Non-nano zinc oxide is safe in pregnancy and nursing. Nano-particle formulations have not been conclusively proven unsafe but are not recommended during pregnancy without dermatologist approval. May leave a white cast on deeper skin tones unless tinted or micronized.
