Hydration & Barrier
Snail Mucin
Snail secretion filtrate that hydrates and supports skin barrier repair.
Also known as: Snail secretion filtrate, Helix aspersa mucus filtrate, snail slime extract.
- What it is
- Snail mucin is a filtrate derived from the secretions of garden snails (Helix aspersa or Cornu aspersum), collected without harming the animals. It contains proteins, glycosaminoglycans, and antimicrobial compounds naturally produced by snails for skin repair and protection.
- What it does
- Snail mucin acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and improving hydration. It contains allantoin and glycoproteins that support collagen synthesis, promote cell turnover, and strengthen the skin barrier. The filtrate also has mild antimicrobial and soothing properties, making it useful for irritated or compromised skin.
- The evidence
- Emerging evidence supports hydration and barrier-support benefits; several in vitro and small clinical studies show improvements in skin elasticity and moisture retention. Evidence for anti-aging or scar-reduction claims is weaker and mostly anecdotal or limited to animal models.
- Best for
- Dehydrated, sensitive, compromised, or irritated skin; those seeking gentle hydration and barrier repair without active exfoliants.
- Pairs well with
- Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, centella asiatica, and other barrier-supporting or hydrating ingredients.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts; generally compatible with most actives, though combining with strong exfoliants or acids may be redundant given snail mucin's mild exfoliating properties.
- Cautions
- Rare allergic reactions or sensitivity possible; patch test first. Not suitable for those with shellfish or snail allergies. Vegan consumers may object to the source.
