Green Tea (EGCG)
Potent antioxidant polyphenol that neutralizes free radicals and inflammation.
Also known as: EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), Camellia sinensis extract, green tea polyphenols, catechins.
- What it is
- EGCG is the most abundant and bioactive catechin polyphenol found in green tea leaves. It's a plant-derived antioxidant that crosses the skin barrier and accumulates in dermal tissue.
- What it does
- EGCG scavenges free radicals and reduces oxidative stress, which slows collagen breakdown and supports skin barrier function. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it useful for calming irritation and supporting acne-prone skin. Studies show it can reduce sebum production and improve skin texture over time.
- The evidence
- Strong clinical evidence supports EGCG's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in topical skincare; multiple randomized controlled trials confirm benefits for photoaging, acne, and sebum control. Evidence for significant collagen synthesis is moderate.
- Best for
- All skin types, especially oily, acne-prone, and sun-damaged skin; also beneficial for sensitive and aging skin seeking antioxidant protection.
- Pairs well with
- Vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, resveratrol, and other antioxidants; works synergistically with SPF for photoprotection.
- Use cautiously with
- No major conflicts. Can be used alongside most actives; avoid excessive heat during formulation as EGCG degrades above 60°C.
- Cautions
- Generally well-tolerated; rare sensitization in very sensitive skin. Formulations must be stabilized (pH 3–5, antioxidant co-factors) to prevent oxidation and loss of potency.
