Ectoin

Amino acid that stabilizes proteins and protects against environmental stress.

Also known as: 1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-4-methyl-4,6-dioxo-1,3-thiazine; ectoine; same name.

What it is
Ectoin is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative produced by halophilic (salt-loving) microorganisms as a stress-protectant. It's a small organic osmolyte that stabilizes proteins and cell membranes under harsh conditions.
What it does
Ectoin acts as a molecular chaperone, stabilizing skin proteins and cell membranes against oxidative stress, UV damage, and dehydration. It reduces inflammation, supports barrier function, and helps skin retain moisture by protecting cellular structures from damage rather than by direct antioxidant scavenging.
The evidence
Moderate evidence supports its protective effects against oxidative stress and UV-induced damage in cell and animal models. Clinical studies in humans are limited but show promise for reducing irritation and supporting barrier repair; evidence is stronger for stress-protection than for direct antioxidant activity.
Best for
Sensitive, reactive, and compromised skin; those exposed to environmental stressors (pollution, UV, heat); barrier-repair and anti-inflammatory needs.
Pairs well with
Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, and other barrier-supporting ingredients; works well in soothing and hydrating formulas.
Use cautiously with
No major conflicts; generally compatible with most actives and preservatives.
Cautions
Well-tolerated; no known irritation, photosensitivity, or pregnancy concerns at typical cosmetic concentrations.
