Colloidal Oatmeal

Finely ground oat powder that soothes, hydrates, and protects skin.

Also known as: Colloidal oat flour, Avena sativa, oat extract, colloidal oatmeal powder

What it is
Colloidal oatmeal is oat kernel ground into an extremely fine powder that disperses evenly in water or formulations. It's made from the whole oat grain and contains proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides that remain suspended rather than settling.
What it does
It hydrates skin by drawing moisture into the outer layers and forming a protective film on the surface. The proteins and beta-glucans in oats reduce inflammation and soothe irritation, while lipids help repair and reinforce the skin barrier. It also has mild antioxidant properties that protect against environmental stress.
The evidence
Strong clinical evidence supports its use for barrier repair and itch relief, particularly in atopic dermatitis and sensitive skin. Multiple studies confirm its anti-inflammatory and humectant properties; the FDA recognizes it as a skin protectant.
Best for
Sensitive, irritated, inflamed, or compromised barrier skin; eczema-prone and reactive skin types.
Pairs well with
Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, centella asiatica, and other barrier-repair or soothing actives.
Use cautiously with
No major conflicts; generally compatible with most ingredients. Use cautiously in formulations prone to microbial growth due to its organic nature.
Cautions
Rare allergic reactions possible in those with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, though colloidal oatmeal is typically gluten-free; always verify sourcing. Safe in pregnancy.
